What would it cost to replicate DeShanna Marie Minuto’s Ring From Jillian Michaels?

In recent reality star news, fitness guru Jillian Michels announced her engagement to fashion designer DeShanna Marie Minuto. The two have been dating for almost three years before making their announcement on Instagram. Michaels, who had a prior 2-year engagement with Heidi Rhoades, rose to stardom off her appearances on the reality show "The Biggest Loser." Meanwhile, Minuto is best known for her fashion company Letterino, a specialty brand that reconstructs vintage denim into new articles. But enough about the couple, we're interested in the ring, so let's get to it!

Breaking down the DeShanna Marie Minuto Ring

The engagement ring was designed by HH Jewels and appears to be a three-stone ring featuring a 7-Carat Emerald-Cut Diamond as the center stone. Most experts are pricing this out at least in the $275,000 to $300,00 range, if not higher. Let’s break this down to see what it would cost to duplicate and see if we can do better.

Given the size that is a 7-Carat Diamond, you’d expect it to be challenging to get a good selection. However, as Emerald Cuts lend themselves to maximizing the size of natural diamonds, you actually get a broad selection. Between James Allen and Blue Nile, there are over ten available diamonds with varying degrees of qualifications. For purposes of this comparison, we will use an absolutely Flawless example for the duplicate and then an eye-clean version for our budget version. Looking at the available Diamonds, the best is this 7.06 Carat Emerald Diamond from James Allen for $470,250 with the following specifications.

  • Carat - 7.06

  • Color - D

  • Clarity - IF

  • Polish - Excellent

  • Symmetry - Excellent

  • Fluorescence - Medium

  • L/W (mm) - 12.64x9.28

  • L/W Ratio - 1.36

With the Diamond settled, all you would need to finish the look would be a three-stone Platinum setting. While not expensive in and of itself, it would have to be customized a bit to fit such a large center Diamond. That being said, the setting should cost over $5,000-$10,000, depending on the size and quality of the side stones. Thus, all in, you should have a flawless duplicate to the DeShanna Marie Minuto for under $500,000. However, it is significant to say that this is an entirely perfect, flawless, generational example of an Emerald Cut Diamond.

Next, let's see how low we can get the price creating the same style ring simply by using an "eye clean" Diamond.

Budget DeShanna Marie Minuto ENGAGEMENT RING

As we stated, when dealing with a 7-Carat ring, there is no such thing as “budget.” However, we will put together a similar version at a significantly reduced cost by maximizing the features that can reduce the cost of the stone as much as possible. We chose this 7.26-Carat Emerald Cut Diamond from Blue Nile to target these features. Coming in at $185,827, this Diamond is only 40% as expensive as our target stone while being slightly larger.

The specifics for this stone are Color I, Clarity VVS2, and Very Good Polish, and Symmetry. So what is driving an almost $300,000 discount? Clearly, the main driver is Color. While there is some decline in Clarity and the Polish/Symmetry, when analyzing the budget stone, you can see that these features have truly no effect on the visual presence of the Diamond. Thus, the issue comes down to an I Color to a D Color. As you can see from our Color comparison, while that does have a difference, that difference is negligible in the real-world scenario where you will appreciate your ring.

So, which one would we choose? While it is easy to say we’d select the budget version. The truth is we would, but we would pair it with a Gold Setting. The yellow hue of the Gold will offset the Color of the Diamond, thus nullifying the effect. That way, the Color rating will not be as visible, and you can still benefit from the excellent Clarity and pricing of the budget stone.
